Crystal Lagoon and Santa Maria Caves: Comino's quieter side

The Crystal Lagoon sits on Comino's western side, a short boat hop from the Blue Lagoon. Where the Blue Lagoon is shallow and sandy, the Crystal Lagoon is deep, framed by tall cliffs that give the water an intense, dark blue clarity. It is more theatrical and, because you cannot walk to it, far less crowded.

Most full-day cruises anchor here for a second swim stop, usually between June and October when conditions allow. In the cooler months boats often pass it as a scenic photo stop instead, since the deep water and cliff shade make it a chilly swim.

The Santa Maria Caves are a series of sea caves and openings along Comino's coast, named after the nearby bay. They are the island's premier snorkelling spot: clear water, shoals of bream and other fish gathering where sunlight cuts into the rock, and swim-throughs shallow enough for confident snorkellers.

The caves feature on most Blue Lagoon tour itineraries, though whether you swim there or simply cruise past depends on the operator and the sea. Smaller boats and private charters can nose into passages the large cruise boats can only idle outside.

The Blue Lagoon is the shallow, white-sand, family-friendly showpiece: easy swimming, warm water, and the crowds that come with fame. The Crystal Lagoon is deeper, cooler, more dramatic and much quieter. The Santa Maria Caves are about snorkelling and rock formations rather than lounging on sand.

Think of it as a progression across one boat trip: the Blue Lagoon for the classic swim and the photos, the Crystal Lagoon for the dramatic dip away from the crowds, and the caves for putting your face in the water and actually seeing Comino's marine life. A good full-day tour gives you all three.

Nearly all the full-day cruises on this site include both, weather permitting, though the exact stop varies. The Comino catamaran runs the Crystal Lagoon as a summer swim stop and the caves as a photo stop. The Cirkewwa half-day tour gives a 45 minute Crystal Lagoon swim in a small group. For the caves specifically, a private speedboat reaches passages the big boats cannot enter.

Bring your own mask and snorkel if you can, since rental gear on the boats carries a deposit and is not always the best fit. Go in the morning when the sea is calmest and the light angles into the caves. Listen to the crew on conditions: a marginal swell closes the narrowest cave passages first, and they will know before you jump in.
